Introduction

UWCSEA was opened by then Prime Minister, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, in 1971 under the name Singapore International School, created to provide education for the children of expatriates in Singapore. It was affiliated with UWC from the start and formalised the link in 1975 when it became UWC of South East Asia. In the 1990s, UWCSEA gradually expanded its age range from a secondary-only school (age 11-18) into primary and kindergarten.

Campus and facilities

UWCSEA Dover Campus educates students from Kindergarten 1 to Grade 12 (ages 4 to 18). The new UWCSEA East Campus will expand its grade range from primary to include K1 – Grade 12 by 2012.  Dover Campus is set on 11 hectares (27 acres) in a central area of Singapore and has extensive new facilities. UWCSEA offers boarding facilities for over 190 students aged 11 to 18. A new, purpose-designed facility in Tampines for the East Campus will accommodate over 2,500 students from Kindergarten 1 to Grade 12, including 120 boarders, by 2015.

Beyond the classroom

UWC South East Asia provides a challenging, holistic education with an emphasis on academic achievement, service to others, teamwork and leadership. Students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities which include sports, music, drama and social service options. All IB students join one of more than 30 Singapore-based social service projects, visiting every week for at least one academic year. Students visit residential homes and day care centres for the elderly or physically and intellectually disabled.
The Global Concerns programme educates students about global issues and through it students are introduced to concepts of leadership and organization and are encouraged to establish their own initiatives. Students’ efforts have resulted in the building of schools in Swaziland, Nepal and Aceh, Indonesia.
Students develop character and learning through challenges, both in and outside of the classroom. From Grade 3 on, all students participate in class expeditions outside Singapore.
